A community is only as strong as its weakest links. Though there are many ways to address unmet needs and strengthen the community, causes of specific interest to the Foundation include:
Because of Steve’s first-hand experience with domestic violence, our foundation’s mission seeks to increase awareness of domestic violence, supporting both its victims and survivors. Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, threats and emotional abuse.
Unfortunately, one in four women will be impacted by domestic violence during their lifetime, with three women being killed by their intimate partner each day and more than 15 million children being exposed to domestic violence each year, all in the United States.
If you are in a domestically violent situation and in immediate danger, please call 911. If you are in a place that is safe to talk, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. They will help assess your situation and link you to your nearest domestic violence program for help.
Family Health and Wellness
As a professional football player, Steve is committed to efforts that encourage active lifestyles. The foundation partners with the YMCA to offer programs to fight childhood obesity and promote healthy living. We are proud to support the needs of the disadvantaged by providing access to opportunities and programs that may not otherwise be afforded.
In 2016, the foundation partnered with Project 658 to open the Smith Family Wellness Center to further support our efforts promoting family health and wellness. As a free clinic, the wellness center will provide medical services to those who struggled to find adequate care in the past. The Smith Family Wellness Center provides the highest level of care to meet the emotional, physical, medical and spiritual needs of its patients.
